Basic Class Overview: The Early Childhood
Development Certification provides students with the two core competency courses needed to apply for an Assistant Teacher
Child Development Permit. The certification program includes course 1, Child Development 1 - which covers the theories
of child development, developmental sequences, and factors that influence children’s development, from conception through
pre-school for all children. Emphasis is placed on sequences in physical/motor, social, emotional, cognitive, and language
development and the multiple influences on development and learning of the whole child. Upon completion, students should be
able to identify typical and atypical developmental characteristics, plan experiences to enhance development, and describe
appropriate interaction techniques and environments. Course 2 - Introduction to Principles and Practices for Teaching Children
in Early Childhood Development –this course is an introduction to early childhood education, including an overview of the history of the field, evolution of
professional practices and ethics, educational principles that support child development from birth through the school-age
years, and teaching practices based on observation, documentation, and interpretation of children’s behavior
